Many new technologies and techniques in the fields of water desalination and energy generation are being developed in the Netherlands. What is lacking is a development and demonstration site where new concepts can readily be designed, tested, researched or displayed in practice. To this end, Wetsus and Frisia Zout B.V. have set up a development and demonstration site at Frisia Zout in Harlingen. To further their aims, Wetsus and Frisia have also created the Salt Water Technologies Research Site Foundation.
The demonstration site will have four research areas for companies developing innovative, sustainable desilting and energy technologies who wish to demonstrate and test on a larger (pilot plant) scale.

The Northern Netherlands Assembly has subsidised the foundation in creating and realising this site. The foundation can distribute some of their subsidies among companies wishing to use the test facility and invest in a demonstration/ pilot plant.
