The research program is divided into several themes which have been assessed in close consultation with the (industrial) participants. The following themes are defined:

  • Salts (bio-conversions at high salt concentrations, recovery of specific compounds, salt removal, etc)
  • Decentralized water treatment (remote monitoring, development of cost effective and efficient point of use and point of availability technologies, separation at source, etc)
  • Membrane bioreactors (decrease of energy consumption, increase of flux by prevention of fouling, development of new applications, etc)
  • Biofouling of membranes (development of new treatment and prevention methods, new design rules, etc)
  • Energy from water (reuse of water pollutants in the form of energy by direct production of hydrogen or electricity, etc)
  • Sensoring (development of water quality sensors: online bacteria detection, finger-printing, toxicity sensoring)
  • Hydrogen (biocatalysed electrolysis, biological hydrogen production from waste waters, etc)
  • Concentrates (development of concepts for reuse of concentrates, recovery or removal of specific components from concentrates, etc)
