Improved production of delicate bioactives

Fouling reduction of heat exchangers and evaporators

NIZO has developed a model system to predict and optimize fouling behaviour in heat treatment equipment. By simulating the different process conditions with the computer the optimal process concerning fouling is quickly obtained. Based on the predicted process settings two or three experiments are carried out and subsequently the process is implemented. The application of the fouling model is therefore time and cost saving in more ways than one.

Recently, NIZO Premia was successfully applied to improve the production of a bioactive ingredient produced from whey protein and used in many food products claiming positive health benefits. The bioactive ingredient is very sensitive to heating and production equipment fouls within two hours. The improved production process performed as predicted with the model. Fouling was minimized, and consequently the cost of producing the bioactive ingredient was reduced by 70%.
